Clean Boating Act of 2008
May 21, 2008 – The National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) today praised the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee for unanimously approving The Clean Boating Act of 2008 (S. 2766). The Clean Boating Act would fully and permanently restore a longstanding regulation that excludes recreational boaters and anglers from the federal and state permitting requirements under the Clean Water Act designed for land-based industrial facilities and ocean-going commercial ships. Ohio law aims to enhance boating safety
Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland last week signed legislation to enhance boating safety on state waterways. The new law establishes “failure to control” as an enforceable boat operator rule. Many accidents occur as the result of operator inexperience or the forces of nature. These are not the result of a “rules of the road” violation or caused by reckless operation, but may result in minor property damage or injury. (Link to complete article)
Maine offers online renewals for watercraft registration A new bill in Maine allows state residents to renew their watercraft online. The legislation allows Maine residents to renew watercraft registration through a safe and secure Web site. The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife will continue to administer the registrations both online and in person. Officials estimate that 125,000 watercraft are registered in Maine. The National Boat Owners Association (NBOA Marine Insurance) has launched a new Web site at: www.nboat.com. The site will streamline the quote-request process and provide boat owners with competitive, quick-response rates. The NBOA aims to educate boat owners by providing industry insight, custom towing programs and specialized insurance services online. The site’s key feature is an interactive quote-request form containing informative text boxes. Definitions of policy terms and helpful instructions enhance the quote-request process and ensure the collection of accurate data. |
Ten Tips for Clean and Green Boating - Prevent oily discharges from the bilge. Keep your engine well tuned to prevent fuel and oil leaks. Secure an oil absorbent pad or pillow in your bilge and under your engine where drips may occur. Check the pads often, do not let them clog the bilge pump, and dispose of them as hazardous waste at a marina or local hazardous waste collection center. Spill-proof your oil changes. For oil changes, use an oil change pump to transfer oil to a spill-proof container. Wrap a plastic bag or absorbent pad around the oil filter to prevent oil from spilling into the bilge. Marine Board approves new grants for boating safety projects The Oregon State Marine Board recently approved a number of boating safety education projects from the new "Let's Go Boating" assistance program. Non-profit groups can apply for assistance each year if they provide a new, unique or innovative program that promotes safe boating and increases youth involvement in recreational boating. Assistance varies depending on the scope of the project and the funds available in the program. This is the first year of the "Let's Go Boating" assistance program, coordinated through the Education/Information section of the Marine Board, which can award up to $25,000 per year.
