Give your Boat General Maintenance

Cleaning up noticeable mold and mildew can be done with soap and water.

1. The surface should be scrubbed with soap and water, rinsed thoroughly with fresh water and then allowed to dry.

2. Care must be taken to make sure the fabric and its stitching can withstand the soap. Using a mold resistant fabric with similar stitching is one way to make sure your boat cover or upholstery will last.

3. The best suggestion is to get instructions from the fabricator shop where you purchase your canvas or upholstery.

How to Do Minimal Repairs

Consumers can do minimal repairs yourself.

First, you can avoid repairs by following a regular maintenance program recommended by the company who you purchased your product from. Doing this can almost double the life of your canvas or upholstery item.

Second, stay on top of small repairs before they become big. For example, stitching that is beginning to deteriorate can usually be fixed by home sewing machine and proper thread. Fastener replacement and small sewing projects can be satisfying if you have the time, patience and the right tools.

Major repairs to your canvas are best left to the professional canvas repair shop. These shops have the industrial-strength machines, materials and experience needed to make these repairs for you.

Maintaining Your Boat's Value

When canvas is removed from the boat it is very important to spend time to store it properly.

The three most important things to remember are:

Store canvas clean and drive with no creases.

Even though these fabrics don’t support mildew, humidity combined with chemicals in the air and growths on the surfaces can lead to mildew, mold, stains, marks and worse.

You can roll some covers but be very careful to watch for creases or folds.
