2010 MFA FABRICATION EXCELLENCE AWARDS

The Marine Fabricators Association is pleased to announce the winners of 2009 Fabrication Excellence Awards.  The contest is designed to recognize excellence in marine fabrication.  The entries are displayed throughout the annual convention and the awards are always presented at the Closing Banquet.

Usually, one Award of Excellence and two Outstanding Achievement Awards are given in each category.  However, the amount of awards that are given is at the discretion of the judges.  Also, we give two top job awards known as the Awards of Distinction.  These awards are given to the project that was the best overall and is chosen from the Award of Excellence winners.  One Award of Distinction is given for the best overall upholstery job and one Award of Distinction is given for the best overall exterior job.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This customer has been restoring his boat for five years now and has almost completed it. He was very particular about the design of the canvas he wanted to see on it. We built the dodger and bimini entirely out of Sunbrella Supreme to give it a durable yet elegant finish. The dodger had to be exactly one foot above the companion way at the center and the bimini had to be exactly 6' at center.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This project is the complete reupholstery of all the exterior cushions. The customer wanted to have something similar to the original cushions, but a little more sophisticated. It is done in all white and took 72 yards of material to complete. The most complex issue we dealt with in this project was keeping the pleat tight and even

Project Description: Made with Sunbrella Spruce, 40g window vinyl and Lexan windsheild for his catamaran. The client needed a new enclosure durable and weatherproof enough to cruise the North Channel of Georgian Bay and Lake Huron. This enclosure is held down by only four Common Sense turnbuttons; the rest is zippered to Kederwelt to give it a clean finished look.

Project Description: A new dodger, bimini, and connector for a very discerning customer’s boat. We changed the attachment method of the dodger to track from conventional fasteners and extended coverage of the connector to keep the cockpit drier.

Project Description:This project included two new sets of frames, a dodger and a bimini with a viewing mask. The purpose of the project was to give the client a bimini and dodger to protect him from the elements. He also requested that a viewing mask be put in the bimini top so that he could see the boom.

Project Description: Radar arch top with seven panel enclosure. The enclosure is a mix of polycarbonate and 40g clear vinyl. Center front and aft zipouts have velcro flaps to eliminate water leaks. Five panel lower aft enclosure panels have been widened to improve visibility and function.

Project Description: Fabrication of a five panel enclosure on a center console t-top boat. Track to track side windows unzip and roll up to a secured position under the top. The walk through panels allow easy access forward by unzipping the outer zipper and releasing two common sense fasteners below the gunwale. This walk through panel then snaps to the inside of the pipe work thus allowing 360 degree movement around the console. The center window may be left in place as a windshield while removing the four other windows.

Project Description: This project is a full exterior enclosure that is both soft and rigid and that is complete with a strung top. The customer requested that we replace his canvas with higher quality materials and a more functional design. The complexities of this project were inherent in its size.

Project Description: The purpose of this project was to replace the client's old, loose canvas, with something cleaner, tighter and clearer. To accomplish this we changed the angles on the frames to give the boat a slick look. We also used 40g Strataglass where he had previously been using a lower quality eisenglass.

Project Description: This Mako was a pleasure to work on. Our stainless supplier did a great job on bending and welding this frame. The top is so tight you could play a tune on it and the blue on black pin striping gives it that special custom touch.

The client also requested that all of the frame work be outlined by canvas. What is unique about this project, aside from the covering of the framework is the rounding of all the glass edges.

Project Description:A full hybrid flybridge enclosure with track to track with a zipper release. Combination of 60g polycarbonate (front three panels) and 40g clear vinyl center front panel. Both side panels were not able to hinge up, so clear vinyl panels with roll up zipouts were used. Back five panels will be used only part of the year, so stiffening slats on aft vertical edge were installed.

Project Description: The project was the creation of a framework and enclosure. The client did not have any type of enclosure on his boat and requested that we create a classic flybridge enclosure. We were able to produce a clean, seemless, classic flyridge enclosure for our customer.

Project Description: We wanted to fabricate an enclosure that would compliment not complicate lines of the boat. The forward center Strataglsss panel was originally two panels which separated in the middle. I needed this panel to be one piece and still match the hard windshield lines. Project Description: This is a large one-piece dodger with maximum view. The solid self-supporting frame is made of heavy-gauge stainless steel, with four stanchions, outside side grab bars, aft grab rail, and stainless steel rivets securing all eye-ends for safety. The side Strataglass windows are separate panels, contoured to fit the framework. For exceptional strength and clean finish, Patio500 is used for an inside lining on all front and side panels and the aft grab area, plus leather chafe protection.

Project Description: Traditional dodger design utilizing the Rainier Diamond Series windows for the 3 front windows. Windows are removable while still keeping the dodger top up and connected to the bimini. Full zip-in screens to help shade the cockpit. Stern rail mounted 1 1/4" stainless steel bimini with dual mast view windows to match the port and starboard helm stations.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Pacific Seacraft 37 custom fit winter cover built for mast-up storage. This cover needed over twenty-eight cut outs and collars. The canoe style stern also presented a challenge in matching the toerail seam to the top of the cover.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The cover needed to fit tight for wind resistance and trailering, yet install easily onto the boat while it is on the lift as well as on the trailer. An access zipper is provided at the stern for easy access without removing the cover. Suction cups are attached for prepositioning the cover during installation, preventing the wind from blowing it around. Quick release buckle straps are used at strategic locations to install the cover to the boat easily, as well as securly. Straps were also provided.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The project was a custom mooring cover. The client wished to solve a problem with water leaking into boat. A one piece cover was proposed, eliminating a place for leakage at the base of the windshield. Careful patterning using the existing architecture of the windshield, tower, ski pylon we were able to produce a very fitted, easy to install cover with a single attachment to the tower to ensure complete water run off.

Project Description: This project was a conversion from an existing Florida style bimini to a dodger/step bimini configuration. Some of the old framework was salvaged and altered to design the bimini. The customer ultimately wanted a functional, classic design to complement the classic lines of this boat.

Project Description: Design, build and install two 40’ x 20’ awnings. The first being a permanent awning laced on to a aluminum pipe frame and the second attached to the first and easily removable. Additionally six side curtains for the lower deck. The aft section of the awning had to be easily removable while the front section was permanently laced on.

Project Description: The customer wanted a top that would provide full clearence below the tower and would deploy and stow quickly. We achieved this look with very careful, accurate patterning and by hollowing the edges like a sail to create an even tension all along the edge. This produced a very fitted look, with tight crisp edges.

Project Description: An aft cockpit sunshade top with mesh shade panels. Top frame features split mount jaw slides on handrail with quick release pins. Top frame had to match shape of bow rail and have enough pitch to shed water. Forward edge of top zips around handrail.

Project Description: Our project provides a unique top design that mounts directly to the tower while providing adequate shade. The folding canopy top design is very unique in that it mounts directly to the tower. This eliminates the need for additional hardware to be installed. Additionally the top's fabric was heat cut to ensure longevity across the seams.

Project Description: This project is the complete reupholstery of all the exterior cushions. The customer wanted to have something similar to the original cushions, but a little more sophisticated. It is done in all white and took 72 yards of material to complete. The most complex issue we dealt with in this project was keeping the pleat tight and even.

Project Description: New cockpit cushions for a C&C 51 using Sunbrella Captain Navy Regimental Stripe over rain drain foam. Once the customer selected the stripe, the challenge came in the design layout, and keeping the stripes lined up.

Project Description: Client wanted cockpit mezzanine seating unit with built-in armrests and cupholders. Seat boards had to be built around molded-in fiberglass armrests which had to be concealed, yet also allow for new armrests with cupholders. Fabric pattern integrity had to be maintained even though seat back was compound radius with compound angles

Project Description: Complete new interior upholstery for a restored 1938 S&S sloop, combining Sunbrella sailcloth that resembles cotton duck with blue Ultraleather that matches exterior paint. The purpose was to get a good looking, classic interior in this boat without spending a fortune, as the boat was being "flipped".

The project was the complete interior restoration. Our work inludes all of the carpeting, drapery, bedding, furniture and throw pillows. What was complex about the project was trying to emulate the feel of a classic Egg Harbor while also adding a personal touch. We had a custom sofa built to be constructed and upholstered in our shop.

Project Description: A complete re-cover of the existing salon settee, two tub chairs and an ottoman. The same foam was re-used in the cushions with new cushion wrap installed on foam. New foam in the ottoman as this was a re-design. The ultra leather would provide a much easier surface to keep clean and still feel like leather.

Project Description: Complete headliner, side wall replacement along with wood replacement. This project required over 200 hrs labor for tear-out and reinstallation. All the panels were different sizes and shapes and had the layout of a jigsaw puzzle.

Project Description: The purpose of this project was to change the theme of the boat to give it a more masculine feel while also increasing comfort. This was accomplished by changing the color scheme and materials. Soft colors and floral patterns were replaced with earth tones and neutral patterns. Even the drapes were re-done to compliment the new, hand-quilted bedspread.

Project Description:Project was to create a tasty tote bag in nautical materials for the owner of a luxurious yacht. The materials and design evolved from research about the yacht color palette and the owners’ lifestyle. The yacht name begins with “V” and was incorporated into the design element of a functional front pocket.
